UX: connected devices
The interesting thing about designing for products with no display, few buttons, icons w/o labels, low cost, etc. is that the constraints make it challenging to solve simply & elegantly. And I find it to be fun. I've learned to use lighting, haptics, icons, sound, buttons & voice to solve user needs with highly constrained devices like speakers & iot.

MOTO STREAM
This audio device allowed for 5 simultaneous BT connections & each person got their own light color. When they were DJ-ing their color became primary. This began a fun "hi-jacking" experience as DJ's traded in & out. Animating with light was fun, & there was a lot of focus on how to make it look as evenly lit & vibrant as possible. The animation speed & patterns, color tuning, LED placement, diffusion, driver programming, & plastic color + texture were worked & reworked until we were happy with the results.

MOTO HINT
The first touch-only headset. Purposefully designed for seamless voice search with an Android device. I led the design of the touch & voice interface, directed the new voice talent for the interface, how the product interacted with Android's voice search, & the light design of the product & charging case.

moto hint
The case was a charging dock made to also close & protect the headset. Diffused lighting on the product & keyring loop on case indicated connectivity, sign of life & charging states. It was fun to indicate battery & charging status on the case as well as device.

MOTO HINT
Our intention was to look like jewelry, not tech. Leather, wood, & fabric with metal combinations. The back of the product softly glowed through the gel, briefly signaling battery level & connectivity upon removal from the case.

HEADSETS
Older headsets were still pure objects with simple interactions like twist to power on. Or flip close to power off. Single LEDs to show BT connection, low power or fully charged. Super fun to make these clear & simple to use.

MOTO ROADSTER
Hands free driving & amplified music from phone or car. Location, size, & feel of buttons were critical to solve & keep eyes on the road.

DECK, SOL REPUBLIC + MOTOROLA
We spun an existing BT speaker focused on phone calls toward music & a new partnership to help us move into a younger demographic. We leveraged our Moto Stream multiple user sharing & lighting experience.

COMPANION APPS
Things got interesting when we realized that not only do companion products work better for users when accompanied with companion apps, but they also sell for more money. This triggered a slue of apps from product finders to car finders to enabling unique phone case behaviors. Along the way I learned better & better ways of making the app installation & product set up easy.
